From our April 2017 MNSights E-newsletter

"All anyone asks for is a chance to work with pride." -- W. Edwards Deming

Much of the Foundations' work centers on helping agents and agencies of change prepare people on their path to employment and self-sufficiency. Core to that is preparation for gainful employment. Almost everything we invest in our community has a direct and lasting impact on being prepared for work. We can draw a line from education to transportation, housing, safety and nutrition and they all ultimately connect to the ability to find and keep work.

Yet, we know that getting and keeping a living-wage job is easier for some than others. When surveyed in our East Metro Pulse, those most concerned about employment cited a lack of good paying jobs or relevant training for available jobs as the most challenging issues facing them.

Since 2013, Minneapolis Saint Paul Regional Workforce Innovation Network (MSPWin), supported by The Saint Paul Foundation and F. R. Bigelow Foundation, among others, has pioneered Minnesota’s first investment in career pathways programs. Participants in these programs earn college credits, develop key skills, and participate in an internship that could lead to eventual employment. Of the participants, 88 percent completed college credit or credentials and 75 percent of those who completed the program gained related employment.

In this issue, we’re exploring workforce and employment. A healthy Minnesota economy depends on job creation, but just as importantly, a population ready and able to fill the jobs needed, now and in the future. The Saint Paul and Minnesota Community Foundations are deeply invested in ensuring our region and state continues to thrive, for all who are part of this robust economy.
